HOW CAN JESUS POSSIBLY DESIRE AND LOVE A WIFE LIKE US?

“So I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the L ORD. Then,…I [will] make atonement for you for all you have done” (Ezek. 16:62–63).

Indeed, how can a whore become the beloved Wife and Queen of Jesus?

God the Father hates sin. He must judge it. Ezekiel graphically describes the consuming intensity of God’s wrath that had to be poured out in response to the sin of his people (w. 35–59). But God loves the sinful Bride he has promised to his Son. How can God possibly present such a Bride to his Son?

There is only one way. Jesus loved the Bride the Father promised him so much that he propitiated God’s wrath and made atonement for her sin through his own death. On the cross, Jesus became the stripped and shamed promiscuous nymphomaniac, the blasphemous polytheist, the “arrogant, overfed and unconcerned” Sodomite (v. 49) for us! This is the ultimate dowry, the most expensive and glorious wedding arrangement imaginable. And, hallelujah, it is ours!

Sing this song to your heart, in the night and in the day. Sing it as your purest worship to Jesus. Sing it to our neighbors and the nations alike! “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life” (Rev. 22:17).
